SCIENCE FUN IN THE SUMMER
Parent of twins on the spectrum
In the summer, I do lots of simple, easy science projects with my kids who are both on the spectrum – one is high functioning, the other has more challenges. We study sound waves by building many simple ‘telephones’ – using coke cans, bath tissue holders, empty jam jars, empty water bottles, etc. We drop various objects in a tub of water to study which ones float and which ones sink (we make guesses before we drop them). This teaches them the first 2 steps of scientific thinking – making a hypothesis and testing it out. We are not there yet with the 3rd step – drawing a conclusion, but hope to get there one day!
