Ideas for Summer Mini-Vacations

  • This summer, explore nature with your child.  There are so many fun and doable vacations, right here in the Bay Area.  Here’s a list of places to visit with easy, fun things to do.


    There are many strawberry farms in and around Watsonville.  Go strawberry picking at an organic farm.  They give children little baskets to fill up.  This is fun for adults too!  There is also a state beach and camping grounds with log cabins.

    Napa Valley

    Safari West offers tours that combine a walk around their wildlife compound in a safari jeep tour to see antelope, zebra, and dozens of other animals roaming the wine country foothills. You can even stay overnight in their safari-style tent cabins.



    Gilroy Gardens is home to 1000s of species of plants. The park has a rides area and a botanical area with tree sculptures – trees grown into interesting shapes. There are 6 gardens with different themes.


    If you’ve already enjoyed the aquarium, you can stroll through the downtown or take a walk down the pier and watch the sailboats.  Along the pier, you can stop by the water and spot hermit crabs.

    San Francisco

    California Academy of Science has a planetarium, an aquarium, a natural history museum, a butterfly garden, a penguin house, and many more exhibits.  The Golden Gate Park has many picnicking areas and walking/biking trails.

    Pismo Beach

    Enjoy the warm water.  Drive right on to the beach (the sand is dense enough for cars), park near the dunes, and enjoy a picnic.

    Muir woods

    Muir Woods National Monument contains 6 miles of trails. There is a 1/2 hour loop, a 1 hour loop, and a 1 1/2 hour loop as well as longer hikes on trails that extend into surrounding state park. All of these walks afford views of thousands of old-growth coast redwoods, the tallest living things in the world.
